For a truly unique way to travel to remote parts of Colorado, check out the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Originally used to transport more than $300 million worth of precious metals from mines in the area, this 45-mile track now provides some of the best views in the state.

The route was originally completed in 1882, connecting Durango to Silverton for the purpose of transporting passengers and freight.

The locomotives used on the track today are maintained 1923-25 vintage models still in their original condition.

Each year in early summer, the narrow gauge railway transforms into the Durango Blues Train, as several blues musicians hop aboard for a unique way to enjoy live music in the backcountry.

Some passengers use the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for hiking, hopping off to explore the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness.
