Few things can be more terrifying than getting lost while on a hike – unless you’re prepared. Knowing the basics regarding shelter, fire, and water – among other things – have proven to be the difference between life and death, even for casual outdoor enthusiasts. You don’t need to be doing anything extreme to fall into a dangerous situation. Whether it’s due to poor navigation, surprise weather, or an injury-causing accident, expect the unpredictable to happen. Thankfully, there’s a group of experts in Colorado that will teach you everything you need to know about how to survive in the wild – Colorado Mountain Man Survival.

Operating a series of classes under the branding of “ The Survival University,” lessons range from teaching primitive skills, wilderness medicine, urban survival, and more. The group reached out to OutThere Colorado inviting us to swing by for a visit – we had to say “yes.”

Found down a long, dusty road and surrounded by a backdrop of mountains, the location of the survival school is rugged – as it should be. It’s close to Cripple Creek, but not something you could just stumble on. That being said, we had cell phone connection throughout the entirety of our visit.

Upon our arrival, the first person to introduce himself was Jeffrey Laun, an active paramedic, an avid rafter, and the camp chef. He introduced us to two more of the group’s highly experienced instructors, Jason Marsteiner – the founder – and Matt Boger, an infantryman in the U.S. Army. We were only able to meet three of the staff members during our visit, but their full team includes a wide range of instructors with varied backgrounds.

We got a quick tour of the expansive and beautiful properly, and then the lessons started. During the brief time we were there, we were able to learn a multitude of things, including how to pack a bag with survival basics, what needs to be done to start a fire efficiently, and how to build a shelter with minimal resources. They even clued us in on a camp specialty – pine needle tea. While we weren’t able to join them for one of the overnight lessons, we hope to in the future.

Whether you’re looking to amp up your personal survival skills, seeking a great team building activity, or just looking for a unique learning experience, The Survival University offers something that’s worth checking out thanks to their extremely knowledge staff, friendly environment, and a wide variety of classes that makes it possible for anyone outdoorsy to find something of interest.
