A Note About Dispersed Camping in Colorado

Dispersed camping means there are no amenities. This includes toilets and water. Please be sure to follow Leave No Trace principals and pack out all of your waste. Also, remember, Colorado is a hot bed for forest fires and fire bans are common throughout the summer months. Be sure to check with the local ranger station before camping. Lastly, only camp in designated areas.

1. The Closest Campsite Near Boulder: Gordon Gulch Dispersed Camping

Just five miles north of Nederland, this easy-to-reach dispersed campsite near Boulder offers up 15 distinct camping spots. Conveniently located just 35 minutes from downtown, you’ll quickly be relaxing under the blue mountain sky.

2. Continue Past Nederland to Caribou Dispersed Camping Area

Head down the National Forest System Road 505 to find 11 distinct dispersed campsites near Boulder. Take note, the Forest Service recommends a high-clearance vehicle to reach these sites.

3. Get away from it all at Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf gets busy on the weekends, but it offers a quick and easy way to get out into the wilderness. Be sure to look at a Forest Service map before camping here, as there are restrictions as to where you are allowed to camp.

4. Camp near the Peak-to-Peak Highway at Rainbow Lakes

Take CO 116 off of the Peak-to-Peak Highway towards Rainbow Lakes. There is a campground at the end of the road, but there are plenty of dispersed walk-in sites with obvious pull offs along CO 116.

5. Head North to Beaver Reservoir Road

The roads surrounding North Beaver Reservoir off of the Peak-to-Peak Highway have plenty of dispersed campsites for both RVs and tents. Explore the reservoir or go for a hike on one of the countless nearby trails.
