CDOT asked to rehab east Vail Pass path
Summit County officials are pushing the Colorado Department of Transportation to resurface the 3.8 miles of recpath that winds up Vail Pass from Copper Mountain to the summit.
Eagle County officials also appealed to the road agency: “The condition of the path has created a major liability from a safety standpoint, threatening the well-being of its users... This situation has been allowed to go on long enough...”
Thad Noll, Summit County assistant county manager, said the recpath was constructed as part of the interstate project. The trail on both sides of the summit are in rough shape, he said.
“Maintenance has been extremely limited for over a decade, and no funding is allocated to address the deterioration of this asset, which is to the point of becoming a safety hazard in several limited sections,” a county staff report states.
A county project to extend the recpath to the west side of Copper Mountain gets under way this summer.
