Telluride's Nathanael Soules died Monday in an avalanche near Telluride Ski Resort.
His death represents the fifth avalanche fatality in the state so far this season. Last season, Colorado's snowpack claimed seven lives.
According to the Associated Press, San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters said Soules, 38, was skiing alone when the avalanche occurred Monday in an area outside the resort but which can be accessed by resort lifts and a U.S. Forest Service entry point.
Two skiers in the area found Soules' body about 4 feet under the snow. They said he had no pulse and had massive head trauma.
Soules was wearing an avalanche “air bag” designed to help people caught in snow slides. Sheriff's officials say it had been deployed but appeared to have been damaged. They said it was deflated when it was recovered.
