Summit County will be the site of the 50+ Open Winter Games, with competitions in traditional winter sports, Monday to Wednesday.

Anyone who's 50 as of Monday (Feb. 13) can enter, but the deadline to register is 5 p.m. TODAY. Entry is $30.

The games were founded 32 years ago in Colorado Springs, writes Geoff Mintz at summitdaily.com, where they spent a few years before relocating to Devil's Thumb Ranch in Winter Park.

Athletes travel from across the state - and country - to compete, although event chairman Ellis Simon said the bulk of the participants are from Summit County. Some enter one event, others enter all.

The games get under way on Monday with figure skating competitions and ice skate races at 9 a.m. at Keystone Lake, along with the popular hockey puck shoot.

At 11 a.m., the alpine races commence on Dercum Mountain. There's an obstacle race at 1 p.m.

On Tuesday, there's classic and freestyle Nordic ski races, snowshoe races and a biathlon in Frisco at 9 a.m.

An Olympic-style awards ceremony will take place back at the Community and Senior Center at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
