AVON, Colorado — A local firefighter was in the right place at the right time Saturday afternoon to help a family visiting the area.

Engineer Scott Pottratz was in frigid water of Avon's Lake Nottingham training some new firefighters on the finer points of ice rescue.

The family was strolling along the path around the lake when their dog darted onto the ice, apparently to greet Pottratz.

The dog broke through the ice and fell into the lake.

Pottratz managed to both keep the frantic owners off the ice and rescue the pooch.

Editor's Note: Nice job, Mr. Pottratz!!  AND to the West Metro Fire Protection District firefighter who rescued a dog from Lakewood reservoir Tuesday.  That dog is in the news Wednesday because it bit KUSA news anchor Kyle Dyer (Denver) during a morning broadcast.  She's recovering in a hospital.
