A professional bike racer?
Growing up in the cycling hotbed of Durango, Teal Stetson-Lee didn't even consider the possibility. Instead, the Durango native was more interested in snow – classic cross-country racing and skate-skiing.
But she recently pedaled her way to a fourth-place podium finish at the USA Cyclocross National Championships in Madison, Wis. – in only her second season as a professional bike racer.
“I was coming into form at the perfect time,” said Stetson-Lee, adding that she started the season "kind of slow – 10th, 11th place for the first couple of months."
After riding well in the Jingle Cross series in Iowa City, Iowa, she returned to Colorado and trained "like a maniac" for the rest of the season leading up to nationals, she said.
She finished just behind Colorado Springs' own Katie Compton (first), Kaitlin Antonneau of Racine, Wis. (second), and Nicole Duke of Boulder (third).
Learn how Stetson-Lee's progressed from skier to mountain biker to cyclocross pro (with the help of Rick Crawford, coach to top cyclists like Tom Danielson and Jerome Powers) and how rest plays a huge role in her training.
