The Rocky Mountain Field Institute is accepting applications for spots on Earth Corps 2012.

This year's team will work on Blanca Peak and the Ellingwood Point Trail in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range (above).

Earth Corps is a selective field-based program that offers "motivated, environmentally conscious students" the opportunity to directly address a critical environmental threat by living and working in the backcountry for a month.

The lack of a defined summit trail on Blanca has resulted in the proliferation of user-created social trails, gullied and denuded areas, and severe vegetation loss. As a result, this fragile alpine area is at risk of losing its ecological integrity.

Students will learn and live the Leave No Trace ethic, backcountry navigation, alpine mountaineering, and risk management.  The project dates are July 9 to Aug. 7

The RMFI runs the program with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Credit is given for Field Studies in Geography (GES 446).

Early application deadline is March 5; final deadline is March 21.
