Lovers of steep chutes, death-defying drops and dizzying skiing heights, your wait is over. Breckenridge announced today it will open the Imperial SuperChair Wednesday. The highest chairlift in North America goes to 12,840 feet and provides access to the Lake Chutes, Snow White, Imperial Ridge and Peak 7 Bowl.

“The Breckenridge Ski Patrol has worked extremely hard and been very diligent to open up our terrain as soon as we feel it is safe to do so,” said Breck's ski patrol director in a news release. “Getting the Imperial Express Super Chair open is key for us to get the rest of our alpine terrain open for our guests.”

It usually opens much earlier, but lackluster snowfall has kept the wind-swept terrain too rocky for skiers. Recent storms have changed that, and we're seeing more ski areas open such extreme terrain. Monarch Mountain just dropped the ropes on Mirkwood Basin, Vail opened the back bowls and Blue Sky Basin and we soon hope to hear that Arapahoe Basin will open Montezuma Bowl.

Despite the opening, it's still early-season conditions up there, so obey terrain closures and watch for rocks (I hit more than a couple skiing off Breck's T-Bar Saturday, but it was worth it to find some great powder stashes.)
