Boulder's bicycle-related businesses generated $52 million in sales and employed 330 full-time personnel in 2010, according to a survey conducted by Community Cycles.
Community Cycles, a local nonprofit that educates and advocates for the safe use of bicycles, sent surveys to 41 businesses in 2011, reports Heath Urie in the Daily Camera.
Using responses from 24 companies and estimates for the rest, Community Cycles found that bike-related retail, rental and repair shops supported 214 jobs and generated more than $24.4 million in revenue, while manufacturing supported 13 jobs and generated $10.4 million in sales.
Education and advocacy organizations supported 48 jobs and generated $7.9 million in revenue, and miscellaneous groups supported 55 jobs and generated more than $9.5 million in revenue.
"We believe our estimate of $52 million is low, as we know bicycling touches on so many other aspects of Boulder's economy," Sue Prant, advocacy and development director for Community Cycles, said in a news release. "This money continues to cycle in the community through retail, tourism, entertainment and cultural spending."
I'll bet that makes some people around here regard the cycling community in a different light! -- Dena
