A missing snowmobiler in Jackson County was confirmed dead Monday evening, one of two brothers who went missing after an avalanche on the east side of Buffalo Pass. The men's father found them at a snow cave, which they had reported building during the search over the weekend..
Family and friends told Steamboat Today the men were in their 20s and worked as auto mechanics in Fort Collins. They were part of a group of snowmobilers who called for help Saturday night after they got stuck near their Grizzly Creek campsite. It was the third avalanche-related death in a week that saw about a foot of snow fall. Christopher Norris, 28, of Evergreen, was killed by a slide Sunday afternoon at Winter Park Resort. Also Sunday, 13-year-old Taft Conlin of Eagle was killed by an avalanche when he was skiing on Vail Mountain. Keith Ames, 43, of Aspen, died in an avalanche while skiing on Burnt Mountain near Snowmass. Six people were killed by avalanches in Colorado last season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Colorado's weak snowpack may lead to increased avalanche danger through the season, said the CAIC. |
