Snowmobiles rack up high number of avy fatalities
Monday, January 23, 2012 17:37

212 snowmobilers have died from sled-triggered avalanches since the 1950-51 winter season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

Of those, 116 have occurred in the last decade, reports Janice Kurbjun in the Summit Daily News.

Check out this series of photos of a snowmobiler caught in an avalanche.

By comparison, 178 skiers, 165 climbers and 29 snowboarders have died in avalanches in the past 60 years; 52, 27 and 17, respectively, occurred in the last decade.  (Three men have died when they were caught in avalanches while skiing in Colorado in the past week.)

CAIC director Ethan Greene said though snowmobilers lead the way in avalanche fatalities nationwide, the same isn't true for Colorado.
