VAIL — A 13-year-old boy skiing near Vail died Sunday after being caught in an avalanche in a closed area on Vail Mountain, authorities said.

The skier was identified as Taft Conlin, of Eagle, said Kara Bettis, Eagle County coroner.

The avalanche occurred on Upper Prima Cornice, which is a double-black-diamond run on Vail Mountain, said Don Dressler, snow ranger for the U.S. Forest Service's Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District. The area was closed to skiers, Dressler said.

The call came in to Vail Ski Patrol at around 1:40 p.m, and Ski Patrol responded immediately, according to a statement from Vail Mountain.

“Vail Mountain, the Vail Ski Patrol and the Vail Resorts family extend their deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of the skier,” the resort's statement said.

Asked if the skiers ducked a rope, Dressler said, “That's what it appears to be.”

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has been warning of avalanche danger since last weekend.

Rescue teams near Steamboat Springs were searching Sunday evening for a pair of snowmobilers who may have been stranded Saturday by an avalanche.
