Steamboat Springs expecting up to 15 inches of snow this weekend

Snow, snow and more snow. That’s what the weather experts are forecasting for the mountains surrounding Steamboat Springs this weekend.

One forecaster is calling for 10 to 15 inches of snow to fall at the ski area overnight Saturday.

Of course, forecasts in the past have not delivered the anticipated results. That may be the case with the most recent storm, the forecast of which was calling for 8 to 16 inches of snow on Mount Werner and the surrounding mountains by Friday morning. The ski area saw 2 inches of new snow at the summit by Thursday morning and little additional accumulation was expected overnight Thursday.

“We were expecting a little bit more snow than what we received,” said Paul Frisbie, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. “The next storm that’s coming in looks much more promising. Colorado may very well take a direct hit from the storm that’s coming in this weekend.”
