The same sloping dirt jumps, ramps and embankments that were meticulously sculpted for bike riders at the Valmont Bike Park in Boulder are appealing to another type of rider, too - snowboarders.

Actually, the 40-acre park seems to be attracting a range of terrain park lovers this winter - including sledders, runners (who apparently like to work out on the stair features) and dog walkers along with the snowboarders and bikers. The results aren't good.

The particularly groomed park trails - left sloppy, muddy and mucky by several snowstorms - have technically been closed for weeks due to weather, and the trails are always closed, no matter the season, to all "sliding activities," specifically including sledding, tubing and tobogganing, according to city ordinances.

The city is now renewing its plea for people to stay off the bike-specific trails and features, which cost more than $1 million to construct, after discovering that the trails have been damaged by people ignoring the closure and leaving deep footprints and ruts.
