Gear shop raises more than $11,000 for nonprofits
Wednesday, January 11, 2012 16:01

Our friends over at Mountain Equipment Recyclers Inc. blew past their 2011 donation goal.  Can I get a boo-yah!?

The shop, which features quality outdoors gear that is donated or placed on consignment, gives a portion of its sales to local nonprofits.  When it opened last January, owners set a goal of donating $10,000 to the shop's military nonprofit partners.

Instead, they sold enough to donate $11,941 in 2011!

Reaching ever higher, the donation goal for 2012 was set at  $25,000, which the shop hopes to reach through hard work and increased partnerships in the community.

What can you find at the store?  All sorts of gear for camping, backpacking, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, cycling, running, climbing, fly fishing, boating and enjoying the outdoors.

The store's business model is inspired by "a passion for the outdoors combined with compassion for military families dealing with PTSD, TBI and other injuries. The store is founded on the premise of supporting the local community in a sustainable way, promoting the protection of the environment, and a 'giving back' attitude," owner Mike Mazzola said in a news release.

50% of the sale of donated gear and 5% of the sale of consigned gear is given to these local nonprofits assisting local military families:

AspenPointe
Life Quest Transitions
The Home Front Cares

The store is at 1005 S. Tejon St.  You can learn more about it via the website or Facebook page.  You can call the store at 210-6427.
