Record number of kids join ski program
Monday, January 09, 2012 13:48

Despite the lackluster start to the snow season a bunch of kids have signed up to learn to ski and ride and to improve their on-mountain skills at Aspen-area ski resorts.

The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club, celebrating its 75th season, kicked off its Base Camp program Saturday at Snowmass and Aspen Highlands, according to The Aspen Times. The program starts Feb. 4 at Buttermilk. An estimated 1,600 school-age kids will participate.

Another 400 or more kids are expected to join a competitive program.

About 600 kids received scholarships through the program last year, organizers said, and they expect more will receive assistance this year.

Sure, it seems like an excellent way to "groom" future skiers and riders, but it also seems like a great way for the ski areas to give back to the community.
