According to 23-year-old Summit County resident Alex Guzzo, competing in the Leadville 50 this past summer was one of the hardest things he had ever done. That is, up until he went for the World's Toughest Mudder a few weeks back.
The 24-hour-plus competition consists of 10-mile laps, each one including an array of roughly 40 obstacles — and not just the typical gym class rope climbs. This involved jumping into freezing cold water, crawling through mud, running through flames and getting electrocuted. Out of approximately 1,000 competitors from all over the world, Guzzo placed 107.
To compete in the Toughest Mudder, participants must qualify by finishing in the top five percent of a “regular” Tough Mudder, a “hardcore” 10-12-mile course — consisting of about 20 obstacles — designed by the British Special Forces; events take place all over the world. Guzzo earned his place by finishing 84th out of more than 2,500 people in a 2010 Pennsylvania mudder.
“When I was a little kid, I was always one of those kids who enjoyed obstacle courses and jumping on ropes and things like that ... Tough Mudder is the adult version of that,” he said.
