After having to delay opening by two weeks for lack of snow, Monarch Mountain is finally getting a little love from the sky, with 5 inches by mid-day today. It's not the dump being visited upon the San Juans, but for those of us who haven't skied fresh powder in far too long, it's a start! What an amazing coincidence that myself and photographer Christian Murdock will be heading up there tomorrow for a story in the Dec. 29 Out There section on this beloved local hill, and how thanks to a couple of its busiest seasons ever, it is bursting at the seams and hoping to expand with new terrain on the west side of the Continental Divide and new parking. |
