Nationwide snowsports retail receipts are up 14 percent in dollars sold and 7 percent in units sold during the preseason, or between August and October 2011 compared to the same months a year ago.

Equipment seems to be the leading growth category, with alpine equipment sales up 25 percent (units sold was up 17.6 percent) and snowboard equipment sales up 7 percent (not many more units were sold in 2011 compared to 2010). Apparel and accessories sales also gained over last season, and strong prices seen at the end of the 2010-11 season continued into the early 2011-12 season.

Data comes from SnowSports Industries of America (SIA) and The Leisure Trends Group RetailTRAK data. Total snowsports preseason sales increased from $565 million through October 2010 to $644 million through Oct. 2011.

The same is true in Summit County, at least at the backcountry-oriented Wilderness Sports in Dillon. The shop has seen nearly double digit sales growth without the snowfall to help out, new owner Chris Wescott said.

It helps that backcountry sales are up 19 percent overall this year over last, according to SIA's research.
