A little love for Julie Mancuso
Wednesday, December 07, 2011 09:44

There's been a lot of Lindsey leading into today's World Cup races at Beaver Creek. And maybe not enough Julie.

But it looks like the hometown crowd is trying to change that.

Here's a bit from the Vail Daily:

So now a little love for Jules.

Mancuso's reputation is all about being clutch. If it's a big race, she rises to the occasion. She struck gold during the Torino Olympics in 2006 in the giant slalom. She also owns to silver medals from Vancouver in downhill and super-combined.

Worlds in Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Silver in the super-G, one of four medals she has from the World Alpine Ski Championships.

Mancuso's a veteran of the circuit — she scored her first points back in 1999 — and she seems to be getting better with age. She won on tour Lenzerheide, Switzerland, last year in downhill, as well as five podiums in the last calendar year. Mancuso was third in the Lake Louise, Alberta, super-G.

And since this would be the first speed race on American snow in a few years — Aspen used to host those event — consider today a big day, and, thus, keep your eye on Mancuso.

And a bit from Real Vail:

Mancuso ... likes her chances on the more technical super-G course at Beaver Creek.

“I’m skiing really technically well, so after my good super-G result [in Lake Louise] and GS [in Aspen] I think this is going to be a combination and a really technical super-G, so I’m skiing well and excited,” she said. And even though her first career World Cup win came nearly five years ago at Val d’Isere, Mancuso doesn’t sound too bummed to be staying in the States an extra week and not traveling to France.

“It is nice. My mom lives here in Vail, so I’m excited to just be able to spend some more time with her and relax and enjoy it. It’s really nice to be home, and just having the energy of everyone out here cheering us on.”
