Early season winter gear sales for a second year in a row are tracking toward a record. Early retail data from SnowSports Industries America and The Leisure Trends Group shows snow sports equipment and apparel sales up 14 percent in dollar and 7 percent in units sold between August and October this year. Total snow sports sales for the period reached $644 million, compared to $565 million last year, which was a record.
“We entered this season with inventories full of 2011/2012 gear after last season’s epic conditions that kept participants on the slopes and in the shops well into spring. Consumers began this season with uninterrupted enthusiasm for the coming La Niña repeat and it is definitely showing up in equipment sales,” said Kelly Davis, SIA’s Director of Research, in a statement released Tuesday.
Last season marked a record for the snow sports market, with $3.3 billion in snowsports gear, accessory and apparel sales for the 2010-11 ski season, a boost of 8 percent in units sold and 12 percent in dollars sold over the 2009-2010 season.
