Katie Compton on U.S. Olympic Long Team

Colorado Springs resident Katie Compton is among the nine women and eight men who are candidates for mountain biking in the 2012 Olympics, according to USA Cycling.

The 17 riders named to the U.S. Long Team are eligible to be nominated to represent the U.S. in London this summer.

Olympic team riders will be selected from this group in mid-June. The Olympic mountain bike races are Aug. 11-12.

USA Cycling's Marc Gullickson told Cyclingnews: "It's my strong opinion that we'll qualify two women and two men."

Also among the riders are Coloradans Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski,  Heather Irmiger, Judy Freeman and Georgia Gould.
