Fort Collins man bags world's tallest peaks

A year ago this week, when Alan Arnette stepped onto the continent of Antarctica, it was the first of more than 100,000 steps uphill toward his goal to climb the world's eight highest peaks in 365 days.

An avid alpinist, Arnette had climbed several of the mountains before, but his goal this year had a deeper meaning. He dedicated the project to his mother, Ida, who had Alzheimer's disease, in the hopes of raising awareness and funds. He called it "The 7 Summits Climb for Alzheimer's: Memories are Everything," but included an eighth peak, Australia's Kosciuszko (7,310 feet), acknowledging debate in mountain climbing circles about which peaks belong on the list.

Now that he's on the other side of the mountain(s), Arnette is back home in Fort Collins airing out his gear and planning a trip to Hawaii with his wife, Cathy.
