Will it continue to dump on Colorado? Snow lovers are holding their collective breath, hoping this latest storm will let loose with enough snow to the south for Monarch Mountain to crank up its lifts. Operators said the mountain received 2.5 inches over the weekend and they are cautiously optimistic of opening soon. Opening Day originally was set Nov. 23. The ski area, which has no snowmaking ability, has received 38 inches of snow this season. The snow was falling early Friday, but it was blowing and ended up coating the parking lot at twice the depth of the slopes. "Keep up the snow dance and stay tuned," officials posted on Monarch's website. Meanwhile, Wolf Creek Ski Area, which was walloped in the first storm of the season and opened early, reported 35 inches of fresh snow out of the latest storm. Operators report 147 inches of the white stuff already have fallen on Wolf Creek since October. Beaver Creek, where the Birds of Prey men's ski racing competition wrapped up Sunday, reported 6 inches overnight, bringing the snow depth to 59 inches. There is a chance of snow Monday, but forecasters are calling for clear skies and sunshine this week when the same course will host the men's giant slalom and slalom and the women's super-G, moved to Colorado due to a lack of snow in Val d'Isere, France. Neighboring Vail Ski Resort reported 10 inches of fresh snow over the weekend. Meanwhile, Aaron and Jenny Brill reported the 3rd-best opening ever at Silverton Mountain, which cranked its lifts for the first time in the 2011-12 season. A-Basin reported only 1 inch over the weekend. Look at the snowfall info and see what terrain is open on the Arapahoe Basin website. Neighboring Loveland and Keystone is reporting much the same. But Keystone's tubing photo makes me want to go for a slide! |
