Mount Evans is under consideration as a possible mountaintop finish for a stage in the 2012 edition of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
Shawn Hunter, race CEO and co-chairman, said not many of the city submissions featured true mountaintop finishes. Pikes Peak, which would be the highest finish in international cycling at 14,115, is not among the proposals.
Hunter said 14,130-foot Mt. Evans Road "is always one you have to consider." He said Medalist Sports, the race organizers, are on the ground examining routes.
"What really plays into a race's decision to hold a mountaintop finish is the ability to build an infrastructure up there for the safety of the athletes and second, for the safety and enjoyment of the fans," Hunter said.
Hunter said no decision has been made on the overall start between Durango, in the southwest corner, and Grand Junction in the northwest corner. He did say Denver remains the frontrunner to again host the finish although they are looking at options, primarily Colorado Springs and Boulder.
