Vail Resorts is opting for snow over sand by narrowing any new additions to its tony, 11-property RockResorts portfolio to only its ski areas.
“The current economic and real estate environments make it difficult to realize the benefits of growing our lodging division outside of our mountain resorts and the National Parks,” said Rob Katz, chairman and chief executive officer of Vail Resorts in a statement released Wednesday. “We believe that by narrowing the focus of our Lodging segment, we will provide an enhanced experience for our guests and better long-term profitability.”
Vail will continue to look for slopeside properties at its six ski areas in Colorado and California. Vail presently owns or operates 15 lodges at its Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail ski areas, five of which are RockResorts-branded hotels. In addition to the 11 upscale RockResort hotels and three Grand Teton National Park lodges, Vail Resorts owns or manages 10 ski area properties in Vail, Breckenridge and Keystone.
