Scott Stanec, the principal at Mann Middle School in Colorado Springs, died Sunday in a hiking or skiing accident in Switzerland, according to a District 11 official.
Stanec did not return from a hike and a search party later discovered his body, according to a report by KRDO-TV.. Authorities said he had fallen.
Stanec's wife, Kris, who is on staff at Colorado College, is on sabbatical teaching in Switzerland and the family accompanied her on this "once-in-a-lifetime" trip, Stanec wrote to parents of Mann's students earlier this year. Scott and Kris Stanec were accompanied by their son and daughter, the note says. Their son reportedly is a student at Palmer High School.
Our hearts go out to the Stanec family and to their many friends. It is quite a shock to lose someone so deeply tied to our community.
If we learn more about the accident or where you can send notes to the Stanec family, we will share that information here.
