Mass transit to the slopes catching on in Denver

For skiers, nothing can make sore muscles and tired bodies groan like the 2-plus hour drive home from the slopes after a day of tearing it up.

In Denver, plagued by ski traffic on Interstate 70, with little hope for train service or other alternatives, more people are embracing bus service to the ski resorts.

Denver entrepreneurs are launching ski area shuttle services this month.
The Denver Ski Bus will begin ferrying skiers and snowboarders from Boulder and Denver to Winter Park and Copper Mountain every Saturday and Sunday beginning Dec. 3. And the Front Range Ski Bus is aiming for a Dec. 10 start of weekend service between downtown Denver and Loveland, Arapahoe Basin and Keystone.

“I used to live in Winter Park and when the Ski Train went away, we saw a lot of business drop off,” said Curt Spencer, who owns the Fraser Valley’s Valley Taxi and has spent the past year organizing the Denver Ski Bus. “This is our take on the old Ski Train.”

Colorado Springs has no such services, though there are options, including the KILO snow bus to Monarch, programs offered by Fort Carson for military and retired military, and ski clubs that organize transportation.
