Crested Butte Mountain Resort says more than 2,300 people took it up on its offer of free lift tickets on its opening day.

Crested Butte celebrated its 50th birthday Wednesday with free riding on opening day, and 2,313 skiers and snowboarders showed up for it.

The Steamboat and Beaver Creek resorts also opened for the season Wednesday.

Telluride and Aspen Mountain were scheduled to open on Thanksgiving.

Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is scheduled to open Friday, Nov. 25. Purgatory says it will be open only Fridays through Sundays for now and will probably start up daily operations in mid-December.
