VAIL — Two people died while snowriding Friday.

Eagle County sheriff's officials say 62-year-old Charles Tuft died after losing control at Vail Ski Resort on a beginner's trail Friday, which was the resort's opening day for ski season.

Tuft was transported to the Vail Valley Medical Center after an accident on Gitalong Road, a beginner trail between the Columbine and Bear Tree trails on Vail Mountain, a Vail Mountain statement issued Friday afternoon said.

According to the Vail Daily, an Eagle County Sheriff's Office statement said Tuft apparently lost control when he went off an embankment and suffered bodily trauma. He was wearing a helmet.

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old University of Colorado-Boulder student died after hitting a tree while snowboarding on an intermediate trail at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

The Summit County coroner's office identified the man as Evan Massini of Westbrook, Conn.

Both men were wearing helmets. The coroner says Massini suffered massive internal injuries when the main part of his body hit the tree.

Vail Resorts Inc. owns both resorts.
