Curling: It's an 'in there' sport
Friday, November 18, 2011 05:55

OK, I'm shamelessly plugging a different kind of sport that's rarely held outdoors these days: curling!

(It's believed curling originated about 500 years ago on the frozen rivers and lakes in Scotland.)

If you've ever wanted to give it a try, now's a great time. There's a Learn to Curl event TONIGHT (Friday, Nov. 18) in Monument sponsored by my home club, the Broadmoor Curling Club.  They're a fun bunch of people, from teenagers up to retirees.  Most of our players are in the 30s and 40s.

There are a half-dozen spots open.  Cost is $25, $40/couple, $60/family (family members living at the same address).

Register at coloradocurling.org.  If you register at the door it'll cost you another $5-$10!

We curl at the Colorado Sports Center, 16240 Old Denver Highway in Monument (west of I-25, north of Baptist Road).

All you have to do is show up at 8:15 p.m. for a bit of orientation. The clinic is 8:30-10:30 p.m. You'll learn all the basics of the sport, including a bit of the strategy involved, and by the end of the clinic you'll be gracefully guiding stones across the ice.  OK, maybe not so gracefully at first, but you'll play a mini game.

I won't be there, because I've got games in Littleton, but your instructor likely will be John West, who has a couple decades of curling under his belt. He's a cool guy. Very lowkey.

Wear warm, loose-fitting clothing and clean sport shoes. Tight jeans are NOT recommended. Take layers.  I recommend a hat and gloves. That arena is pretty chilly.

Or, you can wait until January and if I'm not on the road competing, I'll teach you myself!  We'll have 2 more Learn to Curls on Jan. 13 and 20. I'd love to see you there!
