Mountain lion triggers lockout at school

A mountain lion lurking in scrub oak a couple hundred feet away brought outdoor activity to a halt Wednesday at a Durango elementary School.

The school was under a lockout for 90 minutes while La Plata County Sheriff’s deputies and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers searched brush east of the campus.

No cougar, not even tracks, were found, Sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender said.

Teachers Kelly Fiddler and Jennifer Barry were outside shortly after noon with children who had already eaten lunch. When they saw the mountain lion in the brush, they hustled the youngsters inside, Principal Cindy Smart said.

In a lockout, doors are locked but normal activities continue, Smart said. A lockdown means there is danger that halts all routine activities.
