Katie Compton enjoys dominant weekend in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Colorado Springs resident Katie Compton won her second Derby City Cup on Sunday, sweeping the weekend’s racing.

It was another blustery day for the conclusion to Round 3 of the Exergy U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross series.

Meredith Miller blazed to the holeshot on the reshuffled course, which was slightly less open and more technical than Saturday’s circuit. Compton and Katerina Nash were right behind her going up the flyover, the sharp end of a long line of women.

Miller stayed on the front until she crashed in one of three sand pits on the course, ceding the lead to Compton.

“Sand pits are tough, and it’s so easy to make a mistake,” Compton said. “Since I was following somebody in I made sure that I had an out in case something happened, and sure enough I needed that out. I was able to get around and kind of pedal through it and I think that’s where I got a little bit of a gap and just stayed on it.”
