Iranian ski bunnies need chaparones on slopes
Sunday, November 13, 2011 09:04

The first snow of the season fell in Tehran this week, but Iran's ski bunnies aren't hitting the slopes alone - unless they're willing to face arrest.

A police circular posted on the pro-government Etedaal Web site states that women and girls are no longer allowed to ski in the absence of a husband, father or brother.  Talk about harshing your mellow!

Hard-liners are trying to roll back reforms enacted under former president Mohammad Khatami.

Iran’s ski resorts became something of a haven from the Islamic dress code — and from laws against men and women mixing. Some women apparently even hit the slopes without their head scarves!

I'm trying to imagine my packing list: board, gloves, helmet, goggles, headscatf, non-skier older brother....

It remains to be seen how the law will be enforced. Reports say few members of the Iranian morality police can make turns.
