Breckenridge Ski Resort insisted it would celebrate its 50th anniversary Dec. 16 by focusing on guests, granting wishes and giving away prizes.
But the community decided such a big birthday called for a party.
“It's a way for us, as the community and town as a whole, to try and say how much we celebrate that the ski area's been a part of this community,” Breckenridge spokeswoman Kim Dykstra-DiLallo said. “The ski area, they've got their goals and objectives. Their focus is really on their guest … but we kind of wanted to throw a little party for our community.”
And a party it will be.
The $50,000 bash, an idea that came from the Breckenridge Restaurant Association, will include a concert, a procession of local ski legends through town and, of course, birthday cake.
The festivities will start on Dec. 16, with a champagne toast and cake at the Backstage Theatre on Ridge Street.
Then a group of ski area legends, including those who helped found the resort the early 1960s, will lead a procession through town, across the Blue River Plaza, to the Riverwalk Center for a concert.
The party planners would not reveal the name of the band that will headline the 50th birthday bash.
“I think people would be pleased with the selection,” local restaurant owner and one of the event's organizers Dick Carleton said.
