An announcement as to which Colorado towns will serve as host cities for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge could come as early as Monday, and Aspen has applied to have a start and a finish.

The application to be an overnight host city was submitted by the city of Aspen and Pitkin County last month. Sources say that Nov. 17 is the date race organizers plan to make an announcement on whether Aspen is one of about 30 Colorado towns that have applied to be a host city.

However, organizers aren’t committing to a date for an announcement. Allison McGee Johnson, spokesperson for the bike race, said it will be sometime this month.

“We are hoping to set the date in the next week,” she said Wednesday. “We will know soon.”

If Aspen is selected as a host city with a start and a finish, the marketing possibilities will be immense, said mayor Mick Ireland.

“We will brand this so when we think about this event, they are thinking Aspen,” he said.
