GRAND JUNCTION — The runs are yet to be groomed and the lifts are still quiet. But excitement is building at Powderhorn Mountain Resort over changes being made by well-known Colorado ski industry executive Andy Daly, who purchased the ski area on the Grand Mesa this summer.

Daly this week announced $800,000 in capital improvements for this season and also unveiled the new name, Powderhorn Mountain Resort, to better reflect what will be year-around recreational opportunities at the resort.

The one change that has young Western Slopers most excited is the building of a halfpipe. It will be the only snow pipe within 100 miles of the Grand Valley.

Other improvements include the addition of more snowmaking and grooming equipment, an overhaul of the main chairlift, a new deck with an outdoor barbecue and bar and new rental skis for kids.
