Durango has applied to host the start of the 2012 U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge, the chairman of the city's local organizing committee said Tuesday.
Mary Monroe said the city's position in the southwest part of the state will be strategically advantageous.
"Logistically if we're going to get from one end of the state to the other, it seems to make sense it occurs from a start perspective rather than a mid-stage," Monroe said.

Officials of the wildly successful inaugural race in August will announce the stage cities Nov. 17. The 2012 race will be held Aug. 20-26. Colorado Springs hosted the start of this summer's race.
Cities that declined to apply include Cañon City, Castle Rock, Delta, Estes Park, Evergreen, Fort Collins and Glenwood Springs.
