The clash of ram's horns reverberate through the Georgetown canyon these days as bighorn sheep males compete for female mates.
While the male and female animals typically live apart, this is the time of year where males and females come together to breed. It's also the time of year Georgetown takes an odd opportunity for the time of year to hold a festival. That festival, taking place next Saturday, Nov. 12, surrounds the bighorn sheep.
The herd in Georgetown — some claim it's the largest in the state — is such that viewers are almost guaranteed to see bighorn sheep, particularly because they come to lower elevations at this time of year.
For those who want to see wildlife in action, Colorado Parks and Wildlife volunteers will be on hand at the bighorn sheep viewing station to help visitors locate the sheep and watch with a cup of hot cider or cocoa. The volunteers will provide short lessons on the mammals.
