Snowmaking began in earnest this week in Aspen, with an eye toward opening Thanksgiving Day at Aspen and Snowmass.
The Aspen Skiing Co. uses about 200 million gallons of water throughout the season across its four mountains (Aspen/Ajax, Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass), which will collectively have 274 snow guns set up, according Rich Burkley, SkiCo’s vice president of mountain operations.
SkiCo buys water in bulk from the city of Aspen for Ajax, and has rights to take water from Castle Creek for Highlands, Maroon Creek for Buttermilk and Snowmass Creek for Snowmass.
