New hut proposed for backcountry skiers, snowshoers
Friday, November 04, 2011 05:12

Another backcountry hut - really, a cabin - is planned for Baldy Mountain, and officials are studying the proposal and asking for your comments on the idea.

As proposed, Weber Hut would sit at about 11,500 feet on Baldy Mountain and be the fifth cabin in the Summit Hut Association's system that includes Section House (seen in photo, above) and Ken's Cabin along Boreas Pass, Janet's Cabin near Copper Mountain and Francie's Cabin south of Breckenridge.

The 1- or 2-story cabin would incorporate “green” building techniques, such as passive and active solar systems and a composting toilet, and a wood or propane stove. A leach field would handle the cabin's gray water. And there likely would be a wood-burning sauna for guests' use.

It could accommodate up to 16 people.

The U.S. Forest Service has accepted the Summit Huts Association's application for the cabin. Comments on the proposal are due Nov. 21.

White River National Forest supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams will make the final decision on the project.
