Fort Collins passes on USA Pro Cycling Challenge
Tuesday, November 01, 2011 05:12

Fort Collins will not make a bid for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge due to lack of funding, according to the bid committee.

Dan Porter, owner of Your Group Ride, who is on the bid committee, told The Coloradoan that the committee decided to invest its energies in a bid for a 2013 stage finish for the professional bicycle race.

“We just came to the conclusion there was not the funding in place, or one large financial backer to sign on the dotted line,” he said. “It would have come down to piecing $200,000 together by next August.”

The committee estimated $30,000 had been pledged for the 2012 event. The deadline to submit a proposal for hosting a stage for the August 2012 race was Monday.

After conferring with city officials and the Fort Collins Convention & Visitors Bureau, Porter said the bid committee decided it would be better to aim for 2013 bid rather than try to rush a bid for next year’s race.
