By GEOFF MINTZ, SUMMIT DAILY NEWS If today is anything like the previous 2,921, Rainer Hertrich will strap into his tele skis and log as many vertical feet as possible. This Halloween marks the completion of eight years of consecutive skiing for the Summit County local, who travels the world and chases the winter, so as to never miss a day on the hill. Hertrich, 50, has been skiing recently on the Copperopolis trail atop his home mountain of Copper, which is currently operating exclusively for competition training and individuals on a world-record streak. The 29-year snowcat operator for the mountain has been recognized by Guinness World Records for most consecutive days telemark skiing. Actually, he won't be the record holder until he quits, but the record book has acknowledged he will inevitably get the title. Strangely, Guinness distinguishes between telemark and alpine, so Hertrich will not hold the record for “skiing.” Hertrich, who travels to Mount Hood, Ore., and Chile in order to complete his 365-day season, has logged over 95 million vertical feet since the streak began. He does a pre-dawn run at Timberline's closing day, usually around Labor Day, and books it down to Chile where he immediately seeks out the nearest ski resort. |
