By AMY BOUNDS, BOULDER DAILY CAMERA Bike racing enthusiasts were treated to expansive views of the Boulder Cup's challenging course as racers charged through sand pits, ran up stairs and maneuvered through mud puddles today at the Valmont Bike Park. The annual cyclocross race, held last year in Broomfield and held years ago at Valmont before the creation of the bike park, drew enthusiastic crowds of spectators. Close to 800 racers were registered, including almost 100 members of the International Cycling Union and more than 100 juniors. “It's awesome,” said Ed Schultz of Boulder as he cheered on the elite women's winner, Katie Compton. “It's a great event to have back in Boulder and such a great resource. It's great for kids. They're the ones who will keep cycling alive.” Spectators said one of the big draws of cyclocross races is how much they can see. At Valmont, spectators could get up close views of many sections of the course, including the steep stairs the cyclists had to run up carrying their bikes. The top of the hill at the bike park also offered a view of much of the course. |
