5K Gorilla Run in Denver raises funds for hairy important cause

Beer and primates often mix in Lower Downtown, but Saturday was something special.

The eighth annual 5K Gorilla Run attracted more than 1,200 runners in ape suits to the Wynkoop Brewery to raise money for the Denver-based Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund.

"It's strictly built on fun and raising awareness," said Frank Keesling, 46. He helps run the event each year and said his mother, Ruth Keesling, is the real instigator of the yearly ritual.

The 83-year-old philanthropist was not only present, but true to gorilla-run form, was clad in her own suit, right down to the opposable rubber thumbs.
