Fort Collins Cycling Festival looks to join pro circuit

While the possibility of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge coming to Fort Collins remains in limbo, another city bicycle race is looking to go pro.

In 2013, the Fort Collins Cycling Festival would like to be part of the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar, or NRC, launching the community to a new level in professional racing and shining a spotlight on the Fort Collins Cycling community, according to event organizers.

Charlie Weinbeck, director of the Fort Collins Cycling Festival, said next year officials will treat the race as if it were an NRC event complete with world-class riders and rolling street closures to prepare the community for 2013 when Fort Collins could host an NRC race.

Weinbeck still has to go through the official bid process to get the race to town.

Andrea Smith, director of communications for USA Cycling, said Fort Collins is not on the 2013 NRC calendar, considering the bid period for that year's races does not open for a few months.
