Independence Pass remains open despite snowstorm

Independence Pass remained open during Aspen’s first legitimate winter storm of the year.

The road typically closes for the season around the first week of November, but if conditions dictate, it will close earlier, as it did in 2010 (Oct. 25) and 2009 (Oct. 27). Given that, it was plausible that Wednesday’s late October snowstorm might have done the trick, or at least forced a temporary closure. But the Colorado Department of Transportation kept the road open all day.

With sunny skies returning to the forecast today, CDOT spokesperson Nancy Shanks said the pass would remain open at least through the weekend, barring anything unforeseen.
