No resort-to-resort gondolas in Aspen -- for now
Wednesday, October 26, 2011 16:26

An area transportation board has rejected funding a $5,000 proposal to study a gondola system that would link the four Aspen-area ski resorts.

Members of the Elected Officials Transportation Committee cited everything from environmental concerns to high winds shutting the system down and stranding skiers.

Members told plan proponent Scott Writer, of Aspen, that a groundswell of support would be needed before they could back the proposal.

The EOTC controls a sales tax-funded pot of money used for transportation projects.

Writer said the infrastructure would be paid for if even 40 percent of ski-in/-out homeowners agreed to donate 2 percent of the sale “if and when they sell.”

Environmental concerns weighed heavily on the minds of EOTC members.

And the valley's existing bus service is sufficient, said others.
